Why I hate the character O’Brien in 1984

When Winston first met O’Brien he had a quite unsatisfactory face but he was also kind and mysterious. At the beginning of the book O’Brien is only reference about once or twice when Winston is working in the ministry of truth, responsible for “editing” local newspapers (he’s actually censoring words and phrases that “The Party” deems words of treason.) As Winston gains autonomy and separates himself from “Big Brother”. Winston then meets a women in her late 20’s and they fall in love, however when they found a hideout the couple were not vigilant enough to recognize the old man who runs the shop below the room was actually a Party officer who then grabbed both of them and brought them to the ministry of love which is windowless and heavily fortified. After an unknown amount of time Winston is dragged out of his cell and hung up on an electric chair with O’Brien at the dial that controls the electricity where he slowly breaks Winston’s resolve forcing Winston to become an obedient tool for the party’s favor.

The symbol of Big Brother that represents the saying “big brother is always watching.”

This basic background of information helps explain my deep hatred towards O’Brien because he single handedly destroyed the only person that could help unify the people of Britain against “The Party”. And before all of this even happened he deceived Winston into believing that he was joining the resistance, which by the way does not exist its just something that “Big Brother” invented to catch “thought criminals”
